Cabinets shape how your kitchen looks and how well it works every day. They are also the biggest single cost in most kitchen remodels, so it pays to choose well. This guide explains the types of cabinets, the styles Seattle homeowners pick most, how to spot good quality, what happens during installation, and how long it all takes.

Quick answer: Custom cabinets are built to your kitchen’s exact size and your choice of style, finish and storage. Semi-custom cabinets use standard box sizes with more options than stock cabinets. For custom cabinets, plan on about 2–3 weeks for design, 4–10 weeks to build and 3–5 days to install. That’s roughly 7–14 weeks from first design to finished install. Good quality shows in the box material, the drawers and the hardware.

Why choose custom cabinets?

  • Made to fit any layout. Odd corners, sloped ceilings and older homes with walls that aren’t square are easier with custom.
  • Endless style choices. You pick the door style, finish, wood and hardware.
  • More storage, easier to reach. Pull-out pantries, deep drawers and organizers can be planned around how you cook.

When semi-custom is enough: if your kitchen has a standard shape and you want to save money, semi-custom often gives you most of the look for less. Many kitchens mix both: custom for the island or a tricky wall, and semi-custom for the rest.

  • Flat panel (modern slab): plain, flat doors with no frame. Clean and minimal, and easy to wipe down.
  • Transitional Shaker: a flat center panel with a simple square frame around it. It works in both modern and classic kitchens, which is why it stays popular.
  • European frameless: a sleek look where the doors cover the whole cabinet front. There’s no frame inside, so you get a little more room and easier access to what’s inside.

Framed vs. frameless cabinets: what’s the difference?

  • Framed cabinets have a wood frame across the front of the box. The doors and drawers attach to it. The frame adds strength and gives a more traditional look.
  • Frameless cabinets have no front frame. The doors attach right to the sides of the box. You get a modern look and slightly more space inside. Good frameless cabinets use thicker boxes to stay strong (Consumer Reports).

What happens during cabinet installation

Good installation matters as much as good cabinets. Here’s what the installer handles:

  1. Wall prep and leveling. Walls and floors are rarely perfectly flat or straight. The installer shims and levels every cabinet so doors line up and counters sit flat.
  2. Appliance cutouts and clearances. Openings are sized for your exact fridge, range, dishwasher and microwave, with the right space around each one.
  3. Hardware and lighting. Soft-close hinges and slides are adjusted, and under-cabinet or in-cabinet lighting is wired in before the counters go on.

Tip: choose your appliances before the cabinets are ordered, so the openings fit them exactly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between custom and semi-custom cabinets?

Custom cabinets are built from scratch to your exact measurements. Semi-custom cabinets use standard box sizes but offer many options for size, finish and storage.

How long do custom kitchen cabinets take?

About 7–14 weeks in total: 2–3 weeks for design, 4–10 weeks to build and 3–5 days to install.

Are frameless cabinets better than framed?

Neither is better for everyone. Frameless cabinets look modern and give easier access inside. Framed cabinets look more traditional and are very sturdy.

What is the best material for a cabinet box?

3/4-inch plywood is a strong choice. It holds screws well and resists sagging better than thin particleboard.

Are soft-close hinges worth it?

For most families, yes. They stop doors and drawers from slamming, which protects the cabinets and cuts noise.
